Questions & Answers

What is an item?

Any food or beverage that appears on the menu is a food item.

What is a component?

A component is 1 of the 4 food groups that make up the items in a reimbursable meal. They are:

What counts as a full lunch?

A student must take at least 3 different food items for it to count as a full lunch (reimbursable meal). But remember, some foods can be counted as 2 items if they contain the right number of components. For example:

  1. If a student has a chicken patty (1 item) on a bun (1 item) and a milk (1 item), then that student has 3 items and a full lunch. If the student declined the bun and only had the chicken patty and milk, they would only have 2 items and therefore that meal would not be a full lunch.
  2. If a student chose spaghetti (1 item) with meat sauce (1 item) and a juice (1 item), that would be a full lunch. But if the student declined the meat sauce, the meal would not count as a reimbursable meal.
  3. If a student came through the line with a serving of potato puffs, a banana, and milk, that would be 3 items and would count as a full lunch.

There are 4 components to choose from, so how do I choose from 3 to 5 items?

Of the 4 components offered; Meat/Meat Alternate, Grains/Breads, Vegetables/Fruits and Milk, you may choose 2 from the Vegetables/Fruits Group as well as 1 from each of the others.

What can a student decline?

A student can decline up to 2 of any of the items as long as they have 3 on their tray. They may even decline the entrée if they choose to.

When do we charge for extras?

The maximum number of items a student may take is 5.

These must be different items. You will need to pay for any double portions/extras of the same item. For example, if a student wants 2 slices of pizza, you would be charged for that second slice of pizza even if the student has not taken more than 5 items. If a student wants an extra scoop of mashed potatoes, you will be charged for that second scoop. If a student wants a second different entrée, that must also be paid for.
