Welcome to TV/Br in Hornell High School. At present, this class carries two major responsibilities: 1) to produce the daily announcements for broadcast live and on the internet; 2) to produce a weekly variety/news show called Inside the Rotunda.
Many exciting things occur in the daily production of announcements. Students learn that for everything that can go right, ten things can go wrong. Our task is to incorporate as many elements of current TV production as possible, including the internet.
In order to run the announcements most smoothly, modeled on a news show format, there are a variety of responsibilities that you will perform on a rotational basis. Each of these jobs must be done as professionally as possible; they require daily preparation. There can be no missed deadlines or botched assignments, and I will not do your work!
The following jobs will be assigned/chosen on a biweekly basis:
announcement anchor camera operator
sports anchor computer graphics
weather anchor teleprompter input
video mixer audio mixer
The purpose of this course is to provide students an overview of the various aspects of television production, allowing students to continue in the field with a working knowledge and competence:
· operation of video cameras, video and audio mixers, computers for graphics and digital editing
· types of microphones, connectors, lighting, editing software
· setup of permanent or mobile studios
· jobs in the field
· issues of copyright, ethics, and professional expectations
Grading will be based upon the student’s ability to perform duties, complete projects, and pass quizzes and tests. As stated previously, there can be no missed deadlines or botched assignments, especially for live broadcasts. If this occurs once, the student will receive a zero for that task. If it occurs twice, steps will be taken to consider the student’s removal from the class. Quizzes given may be performance-based or written. Extra credit may be available by producing individual projects or filming school district or community functions.
If a student has a personal video camera, its use is encouraged. However the district is not responsible for its security or maintenance. Students may be asked to provide their own data storage (this could be an SD card, a mini-DV tape, or a DVD). A notebook is also required.
Students who have taken this course in the past have gone on to work as producers (independent and corporate), editors, and writers. This class is a boon to our students, as most districts in the area do not offer it.
