Pre-school Special Education (CPSE)
12:1:1- This classroom can have up to 12 students with one teacher and one classroom aide. This class is designed to work with those who have great academic needs. Students are typically 3 or more grade levels behind and need instruction tailored to their skill levels
8:1:1- This classroom can have up to 8 students with one teacher and one classroom aide. This classroom is typically for students who have behavioral and emotional difficulties. The goal is to try and get their behaviors managed so that they can access the general education curriculum along with their peers. These classes are currently run by Greater Southern Tier BOCES
6:1:1 - Day Treatment - This classroom can have up to 6 students on teacher and one classroom aide. This classroom is typically for students who have behavioral and emotional difficulties. Similar to an 8:1:1 class the goal is to work on improving behaviors to allow the students access to the general education curriculum. These classes are currently run by Greater Southern Tier BOCES.
Resource Room- This classroom can have a maximum of 5 students in it. It is designed to help students build their skill levels and build their weaknesses into strengths.
Consultant Teacher- This model allows a Special Education Teacher to work with identified students in the general education classrooms. This allows students to access the general education curriculum along with their peers but also gives them some individual support to help them succeed. This teacher also works along with General Education Teachers to help support them in differentiating their instruction and modifying anything that is needed.
Speech- Speech services are offered by the Hornell City School District. We have Speech Therapists and licensed Speech and Language Pathologists.
Occupational Therapy- OT services provided by therapists from the Jones Memorial Hospital and GST BOCES that we contract with through the school. Occupational Therapists work on fine motor skills, such as coloring, cutting, handwriting, picking up small objects, etc. They also work on sensory motor issues when needed and visual motor as well as visual perceptual skills as well.
Physical Therapy- PT services are also provided by therapists from Jones Memorial Hospital and BOCES providers that we contract with through the school. Physical Therapists work on gross motor skills, such as hopping, skipping, jumping, walking up stairs, etc. They also work on body mechanics, and building muscle strength.
Adaptive Physical Education- APE is a service offered by the Hornell City School District. This services is meant for students who cannot participate in the general physical education class due to weak motor skills. This service is typically done one-on-one with a teacher and a student but it could also be done in a group. It could be a self-contained class or it could also be done in the general ed. P.E. class. This would depend on the student's needs.
Counseling- Counseling is offered through our school. Counseling can be a general ed. service as well as a special ed. service. Counselors are available in each school building to address the needs of the students. The Hornell city school district provides both guidance counselors and school social workers.
Psychological Services- School Psychologists provide a wide variety of services. They are a wealth of knowledge on all of the outside agencies and different supports and services that are offered throughout our region. They conduct evaluations, assist in the development of functional behavioral assessments, provide interventions and trainings, consult with school staff, and provide support for both students and parents.
Other services that might be needed are vision teacher, ESL teacher (English as a Second Language), Interpreters, Sign Language, Nursing services, etc. Every child has unique needs and it is the responsibility of the CSE to meet every year to decide what is needed for the year to come.
