Hornell Cross Country Parent Information Sheet

Excuses:

If for any reason an athlete is to miss a practice or contest, extend us the courtesy of forewarning. We tend not to be punitive because it is rare that an athlete is a chronic truant. If, however, students who miss more than one practice unexcused will not participate in the next meet. If an athlete misses more than one practice or any individual meet unexcused, coaches will meet with the student, parents, and finally Athletic Coordinator about dismissal from the team. We do not expect this to be an issue. The only conflicts foreseeable are with band competitions, and we have worked with the band director and parents to enable participation in both programs.

Practices:

Begin at 3:30 and are usually done by 5:00.

Meets:

We ask that you remind your child(ren) to bring adequate clothing, food, and running gear.

Students are to ride the bus with the team to the meet. They may ride home with a parent as long as the parent is present and signs the child out with a coach. Students who are riding home with parents of teammates must provide a note to Mr. Cardamone two days in advance to provide approval and notice to the coaches.

Scoring for meets depends upon the finish of our top 5 runners. Each place counts as points for the team. Unlike other sports, we are hoping for the lowest score. For example, if Hornell runners place 1st, 3rd, 4th, 7th, and 10th we score 25 points. The other team's runners place 2nd, 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th; they score 30. Hornell wins. In the case of a tie (which has happened twice in recent years to the girls) we check the placement of the 6th and possibly 7th runners to break the tie.

Expectations:

Maintain proper academic standing. We have been a scholar athlete team for many years now. We enjoy that reputation.

Perform always to the best of your ability.

Be courteous to all others. We actively foster a respectful and friendly relationship with all league and local teams. A fine example is the Tuesday Night Running Club and the pre-season camp; runners and coaches from J-T, Canisteo, Bath, and Alfred U. and State, as well as HHS alumni, have participated for the last several years. This year we will host a mixer scrimmage to further foster friendship with other runners

Set your goal and achieve. Improvement is the keystone of this program-- it is what we enjoy witnessing and what makes us successful.

Have some fun, even when we don't play frisbee.

Letters:

All runners are ranked throughout the season based on finishes in regular season meets and invitationals. Varsity athletes who rank in the top ten at the end of the regular season qualify for Sectionals (ten athletes are listed as eligible based on team ranking, seven run) will earn varsity letters. Additionally, seniors who are multi-year participants but who have not qualified for Sectionals will earn letters.

Competitions:

You will notice some more changes in location this year. We are no longer members in the Livingston-Genesee League, but have received approval to participate with those schools when possible. This year we will be able to run our last Tuesday meet in Bath with our Livingston County neighbors. The disadvantage of independent status is that we will have no league all-stars. However, we find that to be an acceptable sacrifice so that the athletes can get home earlier on a weeknight and so that you may have an easier time getting the opportunity to watch your child run.
